Bharat Vriksha - Trees of India (in 2 Volumes) is a comprehensive documentation of the tree diversity in India. This national-level tree inventory comprises of a total 4805 tree taxa recorded from India. This includes 3528 native and 1277 introduced taxa. The volume 1 (present volume) includes introduction, numerical data summary and data tables, details of endemic and IUCN red listed Indian trees, references and systematic enumeration of Angiosperms (Acanthaceae-Lythraceae). The volume 2 includes the remaining part of Systematic enumeration of Angiosperms (Magnoliaceae-Zygophyllaceae and Arecaceae (Palms), Gymnosperms and Pteridophytes (tree ferns). All documented tree taxa are provided with currently accepted name (families, genera and species/taxa), basionym (if any) and relevant synonym(s) (if any) with complete citation and related publication reference(s), common/local/vernacular names, and distribution in India and world. For quick understanding and location ease, colour flags are provided for native, introduced, endemic, IUCN Red List Category (If assessed fully referenced) and invasive species. The publication is enriched with photographs of many species for identification ease.

This publication with the most updated tree diversity data is expected to serve as the central source of India’s tree diversity information. It will be very helpful to all stakeholders/users (including online global and national tree databases for data updating), researchers, policy makers and conservationists for understanding tree diversity, distribution, endemic and threat status, management needs and subsequent tree conservation planning for conservation prioritization and effective species-specific conservation programmes.
