"This book is the outcome of author\'s curiosity and inspiration to ascertain the role and performance of Village Education Committees due to Constitutional (93 Amendment) Bill recently passed by Indian Parliament for making free and compulsory, education a fundamental right for all children in the age group of 6-14 years. In this book an attempt has been made to present the subject matter in such a way so that the readers get not only sufficient information and understanding about the community participation in education through Village Education Committees and expected role functions of these bodies but also access to researches conducted on Village Education Committees which clearly reveal the strengths and limitations of these committees in terms of performance in the context of expected role and responsibilities assigned to these bodies for ensuring the quality education at the village level.

The book also assumes greater significance in the context of recently launched programme \'Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan\' in the country and will be quite useful for educational administrators, intellectuals, researchers, teachers, social and political leaders, NGOs, students and all others directly or indirectly associated with education and community development."
