"The book attempts to evaluate the role of cooperatives as peoples\' voluntary institutions for channelising their participation in the development of rural Delhi in bringing about economic uplift, social transformation and civic consciousness among rural people. An attempt has also been made to probe as to how far these cooperatives have ensured people\'s participation in rural development by involving the members in the various interfaces of the decision making process viz., plan formulation, implementation and monitoring and evaluation of development schemes.

The book presents a historical perspective of the role of the cooperative movement in pre-independent and post-independent India. It deals primarily with analysis of empirical findings emerging from the study and draws conclusions and policy recommendations.
