Democracy and Development in India’s North-East : Challenges and Opportunities
Democracy and development are complementary to each other. The link between the two is strong enough because it originates in the aspirations of individuals and people and in the rights they enjoy. Indeed, history shows that the interlinking of democratization and development helps the people in all aspects of their political, social and cultural life. Coming to North-East India, the region has gone through many ups and downs regarding democracy and development perspectives. This volume is an offshoot of a national seminar organized by the ICSSR North Eastern Regional Centre, Shillong, address on issues related to the tribes, nations and minority groups in the northeast India, working of democratic institutions in tribal and non-tribal societies, tribal customs and justice dispensation, customary laws and judiciary, inter ethnic conflicts and resolution, traditional institutions vis-à-vis modern democratic institutions, affirmative action and democracy, and democracy and corruption.
