Dhanushdhari Temple, The Grandeur of Bundelkhand Murals, is a visual and intellectual treat written on a temple dedicated to Lord Ram, showcasing the grandeur of Bundelkhand murals. It reflects the combined artistic excellence and enduring tradition of wall paintings that cover a vast canvas of narratives from the Ramayan and the Dashavatar of Vishnu. The rich painted canvas of the finest miniature paintings, down to fine details, features these themes extensively portrayed across the temple’s inner corridors, while a variety of religious and secular scenes offer vivid portrayals of the socio-political and cultural beliefs of the time. The murals depict narratives from Hindu epics, scenes from royal courts, and glimpses into daily life, reflecting the diverse facets of society. Wall paintings on the inner and outer surfaces of temples are a common feature in the Bundelkhand region. However, this temple, dedicated to Lord Rama, holds special significance as Alipura was a princely state until 1947. Bundelkhand is home to a large number of temples, forts, complexes, and other heritage buildings, many of which are gradually losing their architectural and artistic charm. 

Dhanushdhari Temple, situated within the Alipura Palace complex, is a state-protected monument and has been carefully preserved. The book, divided in 2 parts according to the themes, documents the painted panels inside the temple, as well as the 144 exterior niches that adorn the temple façade. As the paintings located in the outer areas are not easily accessible, extensive efforts were made to photographically document and research each detail. The information presented in this book is based on the latest research conducted by a dedicated team of scholars on this remarkable monument. The volume aims to create greater awareness about the preservation of our temple art heritage.
