"This book covers a variety of themes and approaches. A number of papers focus on inter-state income disparities, while some others dwell on intra-state income disparities. Going beyond income, a group of papers in the volume focus on disparities in the agricultural sector. A third section in the book brings together papers on disparities in the social sector development. These papers deal with synthetic indicators of the levels of living, human development, health, education, and social groups. A whole section in this book deals with employment disparities. Another sector comprises of papers on infrastructure and industrial development. A final section covers papers on fiscal flows and the financial sector. Taken together, the papers in this volume offer a rich analysis of the empirical trends in regional disparity in India, the proximate determinants and relevant policy issues.
Presently, the pattern of development has led to sharp political cleavages and the reemergence of strong movements in many less developed regions. After more than a decade of neglect in the post-reform period, regional policy has resurfaced as part of a broader policy agenda of inclusive development. The papers in this volume therefore offer timely analysis of a range of issues concerned with regional disparities." (jacket)
