Economic Development and Ecological Balance in Assam

This work is an analysis of ecology of the north-east region of India from the economic view point that provides better understanding of the inter-relationship between the economic development and the ecological balance. The work has been undertaken at the time of rising awareness for environmental conservation while a series of government and non-governmental steps have also been taken up for pollution control both at regional and national level. Based on empirical research findings, the entire book has been organized into six chapters with estimation of the district-wise presence of illegal migrants from the neighbor country Bangladesh. The book delves into forest cover, flora and fauna, availability of mineral and natural resources, degree of dependency of rural people on nature and natural resources and the future requirement of natural resources, the changing trend of ecological balance, population trend and density in the state, change in environment quality, the ecology and economic development, the link between the modern type of development and ecological degradation and finally, the policy prescriptions for pollution control and conservation of serene environment in the state.
