"Environment exerts a great influence on the socio-economic conditions of the inhabitants of every nation as well as on the nature of development of a country. Development is not just a matter of fulfillment of economic goals but the overall growth of all aspects of human life besides other living organisms. any development that takes place at the cost of environment, although resulting into short-term progress but the disconcerting manifestation of such progress would come out in the form of a raved economy. True development is always based on a judicious balance between immediate and long term requirements. There is a growing recognition that the watchword should not be exploitation but conservation. Deprivation on the front of our depleting forest cover, melting glaciers, rising sea level, climate change, polluted rivers, green house effect are at peak. Overseeing the gravity of the problem in hand, which really a matter of great concern today, this book is an endeavour to study how aware our masses are on these fronts. A humble effort has been made to study the fiscal measures undertaken by the government of India over the years in order to stem the deterioration of ecological environment and whether these have been effectively implemented or not? The role of judiciary in protecting the ecological environment in the face of degradation caused by unabated race for economic development has also been discussed. Some useful suggestions have been made towards the path of sustainable development."
