"From the Preface: The present book comprises all relevant particulars of butterfly genera occurring in India, Pakistan (including Indian areas in its occupation), Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Following information are provided for each genus, in a compact way : original reference where the genus was proposed, its subsequent synonyms, if any; common names applied to it; its type species; species occurring in the Indian region: endangered species/subspecies for conservation status; food plants of the larvae of species in that genus (if known); and brief account of distributional range and records of occurrence in the region and beyond. Selected taxonomic studies on the genus have been indicated in sporadic cases. A total of 427 genera are reported.
Family Hesperiidae has been included in the present book in the style of other families, for the first time. Account of families Satyridae and Nymphalidae have been revised. References cited in the end, have been given in brief (without title of papers). An alphabetical index of all valid generic names, showing the page number in this book, has been given in the end.
It is hoped that the consolidated account will be useful to students of taxonomic studies on Indian butterflies. Some colour illustrations of selected species are added to help the initial enthusiasts."
