Employment trends in rural areas are consistent with these growth trends. The data on rural employment show that there has been diversification from agriculture to non agriculture although diversification has been much slower for females as compared to males. Construction transport and mining are sectors employing large numbers of people that show high employment growth rates and thus increasing employment shares over the period. Employment prospects are thus getting brightened up for the more qualified while a squeezing scenario sets in for the untrained and the uneducated job seekers differences in employment prospects get magnified between self employment and wage paid jobs and still more significantly between urban and rural areas. The book makes an important contribution to the rich literature on impact of trade reforms on growth and employment by undertaking an indepth investigation into relevant issues in the context of the developing economy of India and abroad.
