From the Foreword: "Physical properties of density, magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity and acoustic wave velocity of coal-bearing sediments are lower than those of the compact basement rocks, thus providing a firm basis for geophysical exploration to be widely employed. All the major geophysical methods in use employed in coal exploration viz., gravity, magnetic, electrical and seismic methods are covered in the present work. Geophysical methods have proved indispensable in covered areas and in areas of scanty exposures in locating promising subsurface coal horizons in addition to providing valuable inputs to refine subsurface structural interpretations. In addition, geophysical well logging is employed extensively in all stages of exploration.

A conceptual geophysical exploration strategy has also been attempted in this book, distilling the knowledge gained from three decades of exploration. Geophysics in the exploration for lignite, application of geophysics in tackling problems of mining as well as environmental issues too have been considered. Thus, the role of geophysics in all stages of coal exploration are comprehensively presented in this monograph."
