The book gives an account of the glorious epoch of maritime trade and ancillary activities of Kalinga (modern Orissa). The coastline under Kalinga was far more extensive than that of the present Orissa. Many sea ports of Kalinga were vibrant with indigenous ships those carried varieties of cargo and crew to Java, Sumatra, Borneo, Cambodia, Japan, China and many other far off places of the world. The author vividly describes the internal riverine routes as well as the centers of sea-borne trade and maritime activities prevalent in Orissa since hoary past. The details of ship making, management of crew, different types of merchandise used for overseas trade, impact of this industry on the society and the decline of maritime glory of ancient Orissa have found place in the five chapters of this book.
