"Increase in productivity towards agricultural growth is now a crucial issue not only in India, but throughout the world. It is also important for handling the problem of food security around the globe. In this regard, an analysis on the situation of growth and total factor productivity of foodgrains production, together with the study of the growth of total agricultural production based on time series data will lead towards planning for the upward growth of agricultural sector. Side by side a detailed analysis of the problem of food security over time is also important.
In the present book an analysis has been done to examine the changes that occurred in the growth rate of foodgrains production, total agricultural production, total factor productivity growth of foodgrains production and the issue of food security in India. The study attempts to find out the linkage between growth and total factor productivity of foodgrains production, issue of food security and trade policies in India for the period from 1971-72 to 2000-01. The study includes the interstate disparity in the changes of the growth rate of foodgrains production, total agricultural production and the growth of their yield in 17 major states of the country, concomitantly the identification and isolation of determinants that are or may be responsible for foodgrains production and total agricultural production in different states. The study also revealed the extent of interstate disparity of total factor productivity growth in foodgrains production using data envelopment analysis and find out the determinants of total factor productivity growth. The study by and large examined the problem of food security in India since 1971-72 and also highlighted its status in the post-globalization era (i.e.. from 1991). Policy suggestions have been made to improve the situation of growth in foodgrains production, total agricultural production, total factor productivity growth of foodgrains production and thereby the situation of food security."
