The anthology presents a gist of well-known approaches to and views on the relationship between governance systems and the processes involved in multifaceted development. While effective governance system is expected to facilitate holistic and inclusive development, the development process, in turn, should also be helpful in strengthening the governance system. It is difficult to categorically state as to what comes first: good governance or development, yet their reciprocity and interdependence cannot be disputed. Eminent scholars and experts have discussed in this volume critical issues of development--the structure, actors, process, ramifications, impediments, manifestations and impact. In the larger backdrop, salient aspects of governance have been discussed, particularly in the context of their impact on the lives of the teeming millions who inhabit the developing regions of the world. Contributions to the volume draw attention to the policy initiatives that deserve primacy in promoting a just, equitable and dynamic socio-economic system that draws its vitality from a stable and vibrant politico-administrative order.
What distinguishes this book is its strong conceptual orientation, the empirical support it provides to its analysis and the instrumental perspectives it adopts in offering realistic solutions to the prevalent problems of governance as well as development. (jacket)
