"Human Rights in Bangladesh 2003 provides an annual audit of the situation of human rights. It reviews abuses of human rights not only in the light of the guarantees of the constitution of Bangladesh but also of the international standards embodied in various international conventions and declarations etc. The chapters in this volume in addition to recording human rights violation reflects, analyzes and identifies reasons behind such violations. There are chapters in this volume on civil and political rights like the right to be free from torture, ill treatment, arbitrary arrest and detention. There are also chapters on the right to freedom of press, freedom of assembly and movement in this report. This report also includes chapter on economic and social rights like rights to education, shelter and workers rights. It tries to focus on the rights of marginalized communities such as religious, ethnic and sexual minorities as well as of more vulnerable sections of the population like women and children.

This report in addition to presenting information and analyses on human rights violations both by state and non-state actor describes citizen\'s action in preventing and promoting human rights. Thus it will be useful for human rights activists and defenders and hopefully for policy makers to recognize the need for establishing democratic norms and human rights in the society and state."
