The human rights concern the human beings. Human rights are essential for the dignified human existence and adequate development of human personality without which to live as human beings become difficult and impossible. Human rights are of two types viz. right to have basic human needs like food, clothing, shelter and medical care and rights like education, freedom of culture, speech, expression and movement. Right to development is also significant provision/step. The participation of the people in development process is emphasized. But economic reforms based on capitalist model of development and bad governance being and anti-thesis to good governance fail to promote, protect and preserve basic human rights and also to instill a sense of security and fearlessness. This also divides the Indian society into the haves and have-nots. The human rights of the poor and Dalits are often violated despite constitutional commitments. The retreating state cannot promote and protect the socio-economic rights of the disadvantaged/deprived people.

The volume has twenty four research papers dealing with various dimensions of human rights, which are full of policy insights. The volume will be found useful to policy makers, NGO, social scientists, practitioners of political and administrative system, who are interested not only in understanding the concept but in-identifying the solution to the issues and problems of human rights such as poverty, hunger and unemployment for the greatest good of the greatest number especially the poor, deprived, Dalits and minorities and women.
