"With the origin of World Trade Organisation in 1995 and the implementation of Agreement on Agriculture, several discussions have been going on for the past 14 years on the future of Agriculture in India. With huge imports of edible oil that have been increasing year after year, which reached the level of eight million tons in 2008-2009 oil year, the future of oil seed farming is at stake in India. Import tariff on edible oils which started at a moderate 20 percent and reached 85 percent in March 2001 and started declining gradually from August till it finally came down to zero percent from April 2008 onwards. This has to be viewed in comparison with the bound duty of 300 per cent. Whether all these imports and tariff policies have affected the production and productivity of oil seeds in India is the focus of this research work. In the present work, an elaborate discussion has been made on area, production and productivity of nine oil seeds in India before and after WTO. The pre WTO period has been classified into two periods, viz., pre TMO period (1970-71 to 1985-86), and TMO period or pre WTO period (1986-87 to 1994-95). Several statistical parameters in relation to the area, production and productivity of nine oil seeds in India and major edible oil growing states are analysed, presented and discussed. The integration of oil seed markets with respect to India and world markets are discussed and relations are established using sophisticated time series models. The findings of the study provide answers for the questions on future of oil seed farming and processing of oilseeds in India. It is our fervent hope that students, researchers and academicians find this book quite useful."
