Indian Banking Industry : Issues Challenges and Opportunities

The changes after Economic Liberalization and Globalization process initiated since 1991 has significant impact on the financial system particularly on the banking industry. Indian Banking in the new millennium is facing a series of new challenges, which are manifold and multidimensional under the influence of globalization coupled with the adoption of new technology and stiff competition arising out of the changing situation.

Stiff global competition rapid technological changes, volatile interest rates,  entry of new private sector banks, economic conditions have created significant pressure on stability and viability of Indian banks, which were hitherto experiencing reduction in profitability and productivity, deterioration in quality of assets, overstaffing obsolete technology etc. Among all the challenges, information technology the most dominating one is just like revolution that is of entirely changing the way banking business is done.
