From the Preface: "During the past 50 years India has made significant progress in fisheries sector. This has been possible through science and technology, with large number of scientific manpower, skilled fishermen and fish farmers and with vast and varied natural resources. India has the potential to achieve new peaks both in capture and culture fisheries. There is no reason to doubt that India will not be able to cope with the challenges and take advantage of the opportunities of the sector especially when it has a solid framework of planning and managing fisheries and has a determination to optimize productivity both in aquaculture and open water in a sustainable manner considering not only economic viability but environment sustainability and social equity. However, India can achieve its target and objective in the water sources which it controls, but for international water much will depend on how the other nations conduct responsible fisheries with integrity. Also much depends how India defends for a fair deal in global trade regime and plays crucial role in controlling of illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing on the high seas.

Keeping all these aspects in mind the book reviews the present status, problems and future prospects for fishery and aquaculture sector and discusses some of the important policy issues relating to the fishery sector in the national and international waters. Although the main focus of the study is on India, it also deals with problems at the global level. The book presents a comprehensive techno, socio and economic review of Indian fisheries in the global context. The book will stimulate action at all levels to help achieve the full potential of fisheries sector in India. The book should be useful to students, political leaders, planners, policy makers, executives, research workers and teachers."
