The book entitled Indian Ocean Rim : Issues and Challenges in the New Millennium is a serious attempt by the author to examine the various forces and factors likely to determine the geopolitical and economic direction of the Indian Ocean.

The very first chapter deals with the rise of India and its economic implications for the Indian Ocean rim. The next chapter analyses the geo-strategic and economic significance of the Indian Ocean for India. The study of the formation of the Indian Ocean Rim Association has been made in the third chapter.

The role of India in the formation and functioning of the Indian Ocean Rim Association has been critically examined in the fourth chapter. The study of the Indian Ocean Rim from the security and strategic perspective has been made in the fifth chapter.

India\'s strategic and economic relations with the major powers in the Indian Ocean Rim and its engagement with the African Indian Ocean rim states have been the part of the sixth and seventh chapters of the book.

Pattern of trading arrangements in the Indian Ocean rim, South African perspective of the Indian Ocean Rim Association, Australian approach towards the Indian Ocean Rim Association of regional cooperation have been covered in the eighth, ninth and tenth chapters respectively. Politics of the Indian Ocean zone of peace and geo-economic relevance of the Indian Ocean rim for nuclear India in the 21st century have been the integral part of the eleventh and twelfth chapters respectively. The book is the original, comprehensive and critical evaluation of the role of the Indian Ocean Rim the 21st century. The author is fully convinced that this work would be a major contribution to the existing literature on the Indian Ocean Rim, especially from the Indian perspective. (jacket)
