"This set of two volumes, containing forty five papers, presented at a national workshop on \'Voluntary Action for Self Reliant Village: Vision India 2020\', organised by the South Asia partnership-India, addresses a wide range of issues pertaining to the self-reliance of rural India.

Focusing on the vision and mission of self-reliant rural India, volume one analyses the role of voluntary sector in building self-reliant villages. It also emphasizes on Gandhian way of Gram Swaraj, poverty reduction, developmental options, convergence of delivery system, value-oriented vocational education, planning for self-reliant farm economy and women empowerment.
