Biotechnology has advanced rapidly since the 1950s, in particular in its applications within the healthcare and agricultural industries. More recently, application of biotechnology in the production of industrial materials, generally known as industrial biotechnology, is predicted to transform the industrial manufacturing sector in much the same way that it changed the pharmaceutical and agricultural sectors.

Compared to chemical processes, industrial biotechnology processes are inherently cleaner with less waste generation and energy consumption, and can potentially lower production costs. Industrial biotechnology holds promise for providing new tools, techniques and know-how that could lead to sustainable industrial development. (jacket)
