The Jan Lokpal Bill, also referred to as the citizens’ ombudsman bill, is a proposed anti-corruption law in India. It is designed to effectively deter corruption, redress grievances of citizens and protect whistleblowers. If passed and made into law, the bill seeks to create an ombudsman called the Lokpal (Sanskrit for protector of the people) an independent body similar to the Election Commission of India with the power to investigate politicians and bureaucrats without prior government permission. An alternative bill, the Jan Lokpal Bill has been drafted by Justice Santosh Hegde (Lokayukta of Karnataka), Prashant Bhushan and Arvind Kejriwal after series of consultations with public and social activists. This book is a comprehensive design to offer an in-depth analysis of the major, and rather disturbing, global problems in the human-centred, Jan Lokpal Bill peace-oriented framework.
