"India possesses a rich lichen flora, both in luxuriance and species diversity. For proper exploitation of lichen resources and planning effective conservation means, it is always essential to have their floristic inventories from different parts of the country. The present contribution of Nagaland lichens is a step towards this direction.
"This flora is the result of extensive field work in Nagaland and critical laboratory investigations of ca 4297 lichen specimens. This is the first comprehensive account of lichen flora from a state of India, dealing with 346 species, disposed in 139 crustose, 167 foliose and 40 fruticose forms under 86 genera and 38 families alongwith keys for identification of taxa, 2 maps, representative camera lucida diagrams of certain genera and 133 photographs. Besides the chapters on lichen vegetation, methodology, discussion and relationship of the present flora with other regions, both inside and outside India, the flora also includes 9 new species, 15 new records for India, and about 50% species known so far from the entire north-eastern region."
