"Globalisation has paved a way for sharing the dividends of natural resources by the competent people without any discrimination. In this process, the people with required competencies are surging ahead leaving behind the general population. Recognizing the potentialities of the masses, the Government has taken up a number of programmes to enhance their productive skills among them. The universities are also participating in the race to equip the people with required information, knowledge through its extension dimension. The Department of Adult and Continuing Education of S.V. University is in fore front in these activities.

The present volume is an output of a National Seminar organized on literacy, rural development and industrialization. The papers included in this volume tries to explain, conform, or establish the role of literacy in multifaceted development of the individual and the Nation as whole.
