"Plants are the ultimate wealth occupying the major share among visible bioresources on the planet and hence need attention for their systematic cataloguing right from inventorisation to utilisation. Particularly after the Rio de Janeiro Convention, it has become essential for each country to scientifically catalogue, conserve and sustainably utilise their natural resources. It is therefore, very essential to strengthen the scientific and technological base for ensuring the sovereign rights by the nations on their natural resources and also claim the community rights of the benefits accruing from the value of biodiversity. On global basis, the international union for conservation of nature and natural resources have estimated that about 10 percent of the world\'s vascular plant species are under varying degree of threats.

The present document as a consequence of detailed survey-cum-study provides the available information regarding the occurrence of various plant species in Lucknow District. Precise diagnostic characters of nearly all the species have been followed by field notes, habitat, associations, flowering and fruiting periods, local names and localities. Special data on medicinal uses, chemical constituents, bioactivity and herbal preparations and formulations have been provided as a step of value addition to the document to the maximum extent possible."
