The subject, Machine Design occupies a predominant position in then curriculum of Mechanical Engineering. It consists of application of scientific principles, technical information, and creative thinking for the development of a new or improved machine or mechanical system, to perform the desired function, with maximum efficiency.

Instead of dealing with the design aspects of complete machines as a whole such as I.C. Engines, steam Engines, Machine Tools, etc. It is decided to present the design aspects of basic machine elements, constituting the majority of machines.

The book is intended to serve as a textbook for the course on Machine Design. It covers the syllabi of various Indian universities, and professional examining bodies in the country.

Salient Features: Following SI Units throughout the book. Following Indian standards throughout the book, for the preparation of figures and specification of machine elements. An elaborate chapter on Fundamentals of Machine Design, which presents the complete information about the basics needed for the design of all the elements covered in the text. A separate chapter on Design of Gear Boxes: the knowledge of which is very much useful for certain project works. A separate chapter on Computer Aided Design : Dealing with the design of machine elements using C language. A new Chapter on Machine tool Elements is added to cover the syllabus requirement of JNTU, other universities. Large number of examples, covering all the possible principles of design. Inclusion of, Review Questions, objective questions and problems for practice, at the end of the each chapter.
