From the Preface: We lack a comprehensive account of the medicinal plants used by the people of Assam in general and of Southern Assam in particular. Therefore, it is decided to bring out a document which could be interactive and could answer some relevant queries of the common man. The villagers and tribals have plenty of information regarding the uses of plants but most of it is held either in informal or in loose form. Some of these traditional knowledge is passed orally from one generation to next and is known to the individual medicinal practitioners only, belonging to different tribes. Keeping the above in view we decided to prepare a basic document, which is illustrated with a number of coloured photographs, all details of information of plants of their latest scientific names, brief description, vernacular names, habital, early reference of their reported distribution in published floras of the region, local utilization in medicine and established report for comparison to verify the authenticity. Further the outcome of this investigation is thoroughly discussed and highlighted. This book contains description of the medicinal plants collected in Southern Assam. The present work would definitely serve as the basic data base providing research material on the subject matter.
