"Delhi has a long history going back to protohistoric period. The location of the city attracted Indian rulers of all kinds from ancient times because of its strategic and commercial value. The city of Delhi has thus seen the rise and fall of many kingdoms. A city which has witnessed so many events has many a tales to tell in the shape of monuments.

The present work is a compilation of monuments on the basis of their location by the archaeological officers of Delhi. The list includes more than 1200 monuments and covers the well known as well as the least known. This is perhaps the only book that gives a list of monuments extant at the beginning of this century, many of which are non-existent today or are in the most dilapidated condition. Such an exhaustive study was not compiled before, nor is likely to be compiled in future. It meticulously gives all the particulars of the monument including its history, architecture and events associated with it.

The present work is intended for the use of historians, conservators, tourists, archaeologists and also for the lay readers. It is hoped that this book will encourage art lovers and historians throughout the world to come to Delhi and help them to appreciate and conserve these priceless treasures for posterity." (jacket)
