"In the modern world the energy use has become indices for development. The non-conventional source of energy involves dependence on natural resources such as water, wind, bio mass, solar sources. For harnessing of energy from these sources it has become necessary to assess/identify the potential, technology for generation of energy and evolve mechanism for financial inputs. The NE region of the country is rich in all the above mentioned sources and if the sources are used properly, the region can achieve substantial energy production from renewable sources. The importance of renewable energy sector is more relevant in NE region because of the difficult terrain and less availability of grid power to far-flung villages of the region. Thus the energy generated locally through these sources can help in promotion of economic activities in the villages and smaller towns of the region.

The North Eastern Regional Institute of Water and Land Management (NERIWALM) being an institute devoted to management of natural resources in the NE region took the initiative in organizing a national seminar on renewable energy at Tezpur. The purpose of the seminar was to provide a platform to the scientists, administrators, academician, developmental department and NGO for discussion on the renewable energy and put forward various recommendation for rapid promotion of this sector, particularly for NE region."
