"Revealing India\'s Past was conceived at the Council of Indian Society at London which requested its learned member, the editor of this work, Mr. John Cumming, to place the achievements of archaeological survey on record. This entailed enlisting the services of the past and then present officers of the archaeological department which included some of the foremost names in the history and development of Indian archaeology.

It is through the labours of these pioneering archaeologists that a subject as wide as this could be explored and put together so beautifully in the shape of this book. The editor has maintained a unique unity of design, while retaining the individual characteristics of the contributors, twenty-two in all -- fourteen being Indian." (jacket)
