Shirobhushan : Headgear
From the beginning of human civilization, man is very particular about his dress and adornment. Shirobhushan is one of the most important components of it. It is the integral part of costume. Shirobhushan is the name given to any element which is worn on one’s head as headwear, headgear, head-dress or head ornament. It is a covering for head either for practical reasons such as physical protection or for ornamental, ceremonial or symbolical purposes. It has social and religious importance. Head dress is the most identifiable cultural aspect which reflects the identity of an ethnic group. It also signifies the status of a person within the community. It is mostly used throughout Indian subcontinent and also other parts of the world.
In Indian culture since ages, people were very fond of decorating their hair in different styles as is evident in the terracotta, stone and metal figures. The artisans in early times have crafted hair dressing or head ornaments with a lot of artistry in order to make them skilful wonders. From the very earliest times it evolved over the centuries into increasingly precious versions.
Shirobhushan constitute a thread of continuity as a form of culture trait between the ancient period and the present. It serves a variety of purposes.
