In India, the concept of social exclusion has been pre dominantly used in understanding caste based discrimination. It is a fact, that caste is a unique determinant of social exclusion in the Indian subcontinent. But still there is a dearth of in-depth research work to develop methodologies and appropriate indicators to capture various dimensions of social exclusion in India.

In this holistic study the author investigates the nature, causes and consequences of social exclusion and also develops a strategy for policy formulation. From the historical evidences, case studies and from a multidimensional analysis author examines how social exclusion or deprivation was prevailed in the past and also continues to exist present in Tripura. To find out the ways of methods to promote inclusion of the marginalised section in to the mainstream life, the author develops a strategy to identify the most vulnerable people in the society through a multidimensional analysis.
