"The book entitled Structural Adjustment and Socio-Economic Development critically examines the various issues associated with the economic reform programmes mainly in the context of India, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Ghana and Zambia. The authors have made serious endeavour to have a comprehensive analysis of the concept of structural adjustment as well as the review of literature in the very first chapter of this book. Structural adjustment and challenges for Africa\'s economic development have been analysed in the next chapter. The impact of structural adjustment on poverty reduction has been investigated with a particular reference to Uganda in the third chapter of this book. The next chapter deals with Zimbabwe\'s Structural Adjustment Policy. A comparative study of economic reform policy of Ghana and Zambia has been made in the fifth chapter. A case study of Tamil Nadu (India) has been the focus of the sixth chapter. The authors have attempted to explore the possible alternatives to the structural adjustment programmes in the final chapter. This book is the original, comprehensive and critical analysis of the economic reform policy and its socio-political implications for the developing world." (jacket)
