Both they worked together to accomplish their goal and carried through also. But it is an interesting thing to note that they were the men of two different idealogies. Of them one is Chandragupta Maurya the first emperor of unified India and also the founder of Mauryan dynasty of Magadha at Pataliputra. Other one is Chanakya alias Kautilya the prime minister of emperor Chandragupta. Both proved triumphant in their respective mission but the end of their life witnessed complete differently.
