"From time to time there have been various encyclopedias published containing variety of contribution relating to dogs but there are very few with the preface Kennel and the information they contain is necessarily curtailed, but their Kennel encyclopedia by Frank Barton is complete in itself, it has covered the remarkable improvements that have taken place in certain breeds. The regeneration from the dormant and semi-dormant conditions of some varieties; the replacement and the substitution of one breed for another, to say nothing of the extraordinary changes brought about by selection in the working capabilities of gun dogs. Dog Shows and Canine Associations represent the mainspring of efficiency in the improvement of breeds and of these bodies that have a superabundance all working for a common cause, namely, "The Good of the Dog", but they have their limitations in this respect requiring supplemental literature to aid them in their good work. Author believes that the present Kennel Encyclopedia has been slipped from anchor with a means to this end. For may years it has been the ambition of the writer to produce a work with encyclopedic characteristics and this work has some pretence to comply with this definitions-a work embodying the principal facts; the practical facts; deduction from experience; and the essentials of matter relating to canine affairs in general."
