The site of Nilakantha in the Alwar district of Rajasthan in India, boasts of the remains of nearly 18-20 temples. The earliest inscription from this area, gives its date as VS 979 or 922 AD. It is a remarkable Pratihara site of 10th century which displays Saiva, Jaina, Brahmanic and even Buddhist sculptures in the same compound. The area becomes all the more noteworthy because the antiquity of the surrounding area goes back to stone age and continues to show activity in pre-Harappan, Mauryan, Sunga and even Kushana times. At present the site of Nilakantha is not only difficult to reach but also surrounded by jungles. (jacket)
