Vaiyakaranabhusana of Kaundabhatta (2 Vols)
From the preface: "As mentioned in the first volume which contained the English translation of the Dhatvarthanirnaya - section of the Vaiyakaranabhusana of Kaundabhatta (or Kondbhatta) I am presenting the English translation of the second section of the same text, called Lakarartha-nirnaya. Since the original Sanskrit is in the style of a vada -text, the free rendering in English is made in a dialogue form. I hope, the translation is readable and helpful in grouping the arguments of the Vaiyakaranas along with those of their opponents.
As mentioned in the preface of the first volume, this work is a highly mature contribution of Kaundabhatta on the philosophy of language. The Vaiyakaranabhusana is a huge work and it contains thirteen sections on thirteen topics each one representing a particular part of Sanskrit expression. They are:
1. Dhatvarthanirnaya (Discussion on the meaning of a verbal root)
2. Lakarartha-nirnaya (Discussion on the meaning of a personal suffix)
3. Subarthanirnaya (Discussion on the meaning of a case-termination)
4. Namarthanirnaya (Discussion on the meaning of a nominal bare)
5. Samasarthanirnaya (Discussion on the meaning of a compound form)
6. Nanarthanirnaya (Discussion on the meaning of a negative particle)
7. Nipatartha-nirnaya (Discussion on the meaning of a indiclinables)
8. Bhavapratyayartha nirnaya (Discussion on the meaning of an abstract suffix)
9. Devatapratyayarthanirnaya (Discussion on the meaning of a deity-marker suffix)
10. Abhedaikasamkhyanirnaya (Discussion on the meaning of abhedaikatva)
11. Samkhyavivaksanirnaya (Discussion on the meaning of a number)
12. Ktvapratyadinam arthanirnaya (Discussion on the meaning of -tva etc.)
13. Sphotanirnaya (Discussion on the theory of sphota).
"With this volume we are completing two sections. The remaining eleven sections will be presented in sequence as and when they are ready."
